Agribusiness Emphasis

Assessment will be more readily feasible if students take a common body of courses.

This change will also delineate between the Business Administration Major and the Management Major. A major criticism from our accrediting agency was that these majors were too alike. This will separate them and will also place the emphasis areas within the Business Administration Major.

None None
III. Major Requirement Change Management Major, page 108 of current catalogue

There are three emphasis areas listed.

Eliminate the three emphasis areas and add the following:
Five selections (15 hours) from the following choices:

MK 340 or MK 350

VII. New Course & Major Requirement Change TY 433 Network System Administration II Course Description: Introduces the installation, networking, and security concepts of the Windows 2000 Server Operating System as related to the needs of business, industry, and government agencies. Prerequisite: TY 333 Network System Administration I. This course will replace the current course of TY 436 Computer-Integrated Manufacturing in the catalog because according to alumni, current graduating seniors, and the industry we serve, a second course in Network System Administration would better prepare graduates in the area of computers in the workforce. The implementation of this course would not affect other programs. It will only enhance the credentials of any student who participates and successfully completes the course. The only financial cost to adding this course is the price of upgrading existing software, which must be done anyway.
VIII. Course Deletion TY 436 Computer-Integrated Manufacturing Delete course from catalog and replace with the new course entitled TY433 Network System Administration II. The course can no longer feasibly be taught. We do not have the funds or resources to teach a truly integrated Computer-Integrated Manufacturing class. None None

I. New Course   EH 311. Women’s Literature (2)
A study of works of selected women writers from the medieval period to the present. Prerequisite: EH 302.*
Women’s literature will reflect the interests of the majority of the department’s majors, who are women. Additionally, the course will add diversity to our holdings and offer a course that is listed in all English departments in the state. None None
II. New Course,
Course Number, Name, Description, & Prerequisite Change
  English 330. African-
American Literature (2)
A study of literature by African-American authors from the days of slavery to the present. Prerequisite: EH 302.*
The course is offered to provide presence to an important subject, to make English offerings more varied, and to offer a course found in all English departments in the state. Given the university’s minority population, such a course would be undoubtedly appealing and might serve as a means of recruiting English majors or minors or Language Arts students As this course would be an elective, it would have no adverse effect on other academic programs. Personnel is available; no budgetary implications apply.
III. New Course   EH 335. Southern Literature (2)
Authors, works, and literary movements associated with the American South. Prerequisite: EH 302.*
This course is a much needed addition to the department’s offerings, as it represents the geographic location in which we and most of our students live; thus the course should be appealing to all. This course is almost always one of the most popular courses in other English departments across the state. None None
IV. Course Deletion EH 340. Multi-Cultural Literature (2) This course will be deleted in order to offer three courses that are more specifically multi-cultural. The new courses will provide a greater diversity and will be able to offer them more often.

I. Course Description Change Currently, the course description of BY 389 (Advanced Laboratory Practicum in Biology) has no mention of repeated hours. Add to the description of BY 389:

"This course may be repeated for a maximum of three semester hours credit."

The Advanced Laboratory Practicum allows students to work with individual professors in advanced training in their area of interest. It is beneficial to allow multiple semesters of such exposure. None None
II. Course Number Change CH 370 Biochemistry Change Number to CH 471 BY 471 and CH 471, Biochemistry can be used in a major/minor in Biology or Chemistry and should be listed with the same number and at the senior level in both areas. None None
III. Course Number & Major Requirement Change Currently, Applied Statistics in Science is listed as BY 391.

The Core Curriculum in Biology currently includes BY 391 (Applied Statistics in Science).

BY 391 will be deleted from the core curriculum in biology and replaced by MH 246.The new course number for Applied Statistics in Science will be:
MH 246. Applied Statistics in Science (4) – Introduction to basic statistical principles and their application in the sciences, especially the life sciences. Includes descriptive statistics, probability, simple hypothesis testing, binomial and Poisson distribution, analysis of variance, and regression and correlation. Three lecture and two laboratory hours per week
. Prerequisite: MH 114.
BY 391 will no longer be taught. MH 246 will replace it.

Since this course serves a wider audience than simply biology students, it is appropriate to list it under mathematics.

None None
IV. Course Name Change Currently, BY 101 is listed as "General Biology I". BY 101 should be listed as "General Biology". There is no longer a second semester course in General Biology. None None
V. Major Requirement Change Currently, the Environmental Sciences Comprehensive major offers the option of taking CH 321 (Quantitative Analysis) or CH 322 (Instrumental Methods of Analysis). CH 321 will be required. The option of CH 322 will be removed. Due to changes in the structure of the courses, CH 322 (Instrumental Methods of Analysis) is no longer a viable option for this major. I. New Course, Course Deletion, Course Number, Name, & Description Change NS 201 and NS 202 are currently 14-hour courses. NS 201 contains theory related to maternal/child nursing and adult health nursing. NS 202 contains theory related to mental health nursing and critical care nursing NS 201 will be converted into two 7-hour courses. NS 202 will be converted into a 5 and a 9-hour course. The current 201 will be converted to NS 201 Maternal/Child Nursing (7 hours) and NS 202 Adult Health Nursing (7 hours). The current NS 202 will be converted to NS 203 Mental Health Nursing (5 hours) and NS 204 Advanced Adult and Critical Care Nursing (9 hours) This was a suggestion from the Alabama Board of Nursing when the curriculum proposal for conversion to semester system was approved in 1999. The rationale is that a grade of D or F in nursing courses would have less impact on the student’s overall grade point average. None None
