I. Course Prerequisite Change BY 233 Applied Nutrition has prerequisities of BY 101 or BY 232. We propose eliminate BY 101 as a prerequisite and require students to have BY 232. The level of preparation needed for success in this course can only be attained through successful completion of BY 232, in which students are introduced to the function of the digestive system. Academic implications of this change in acceptable prerequisite should be minimal. Students taking applied nutrition will typically complete BY 232 prior to enrollment in the class. None.
II. New Course   Propose a new course, BY391, Applied Statistics in Biology (4 semester hours). Prerequisites: MH 113 and eight hours in biology.
This course will provide an introduction to basic statistical principles and their application to biological problems.  Topics covered will include descriptive statistics, probability, and simple hypothesis testing.
Currently, MH 241 is required in the core curriculum for all majors in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. There is a need to elevate the mathematics requirements. This cannot be done while requiring MH 241. However, certain majors (and specific students in all majors) in the college have a need for a course in statistical applications. This course would serve the needs of biology majors, as well as other science majors, for a course in basic statistics. MH 241 will be removed from the core curriculum. This course would be taught with existing facilities and faculty.
III. New Course Currently, Historical Geology is offered as GE 320 Propose cross-listing Historical Geology as BY 392. 4 Semester Hours.
Course Description: Methods of discovering the earth’s history, including introduction to fossils and stratigraphy.  Physical and biological history of the earth with emphasis on the North American continent.  Three lecture and three laboratory hours per week.  Prerequisite: twelve hours of biology.
This course has significant biological content and is suitable for cross-listing with a BY prefix. It will provide another upper level elective for biology majors. None This course will be taught with existing facilities and instructors.
IV. New Course BY 409, Professional Seminar, has been taught in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences for two years.  It was inadvertently omitted from the 1999-2000 Catalogue. Propose a new course, BY 409 – Professional Seminar (1 Semester Hour).  This is actually just a relisting of an existing course.
This course provides students with information and counseling pertinent to prerequisite academic careers in science, mathematics and medicine. Two lecture hours per week. Prerequisite: sophomore standing or permission of the Dean.
This course is valuable in preparing student’s for success in professional careers. It has been instrumental in helping our students succeed in the admission process for graduate, medical and veterinary school. None This course will be taught with existing facilities and instructors.
V. New Course Currently, Paleontology is listed as GE 340. Propose cross-listing Paleontology as BY 393. Four semester hours.
Course Description: Taxonomic principles; identification, characteristics, and evolution of the geologically important fossil groups; principles of biostratigraphy; and the cataloguing of fossils collected in the field.  Includes several local and one day field trips.  Three lecture and three laboratory hours per week.  Prerequisite: twelve hours of biology and permission of dean.
This course contains significant biological content and is suitable for cross-listing in Biology. None This course would be taught with existing facilities and faculty.
VI. New Course   Propose a new course, BY 389 – Advanced Laboratory Practicum in Biology (1 Semester Hour).
This course will provide advanced training in the planning, preparation, teaching and evaluation of laboratory and/or field activities in a specific area of biology.  Emphasis is on techniques specific to a particular discipline within the field.  Five contact hours per week.  Prerequisite: Twenty semester hours in biology and permission of instructor and dean.
This course would allow students who have skills and interests in a particular biological discipline to work closely with faculty in that area in the design and conduct of laboratory experiments, field trips and advanced studies. None This course will be taught with existing facilities and instructors.
VII. Course Number Change Currently, Biochemistry is listed as BY 370. Propose changing course number of Biochemistry to BY 471. The content of this course makes it more suitable for listing as a senior/graduate level offering. None None
VIII. New Course Currently Biochemistry is listed only as a junior level course (BY 370). Propose a new graduate level course in Biochemistry, BY 571. We are proposing a changing the number of the undergraduate biochemistry course to BY 471 given that the course content makes it suitable for listing as a senior/graduate level course. A listing for the graduate section is necessary. None None. The course will be taught with existing facilities and instructors.
IX. Major Requirement Change The Environmental Sciences Comprehensive now requires 8 semester hours of approved electives. Reduce approved electives to 5 semester hours and add TY 352, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (3) as a required course. Encounter with hazardous materials is commonplace in various environmental science careers. This course provides the information necessary for person to work safely around hazardous materials. Many Environmental Science Internship sites prefer, some even require, that interns have this training before interning at their site. None None
X. New Major Requirement * This form describes a proposed new major in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. Currently, most pre-professional students major in either biology or chemistry, with a minor in the other. In addition, they are typically advised to take other courses that are not included in either of the majors. While many of these students have been successful, we feel that a comprehensive major would be more effective in preparing them. We propose a new major, Biology Comprehensive:
In addition to the biology core:
BY 231 Human Anatomy & Physiology I
BY 232 Human Anatomy & Physiology II
BY 308 Seminar in Biology
BY 330 Hematology
BY 331 Immunology
BY 340 Microbiology
BY 380 Genetics
BY 421 Parasitology OR
BY 422 Comparative Anatomy
BY 450 Ecology
BY 470 General Physiology OR
BY 472 Cell Biology
BY 471 Biochemistry
Botany Elective (300 –400 level)
Biology Elective (300-400 level)
MH 121 Calculus I
PH 201 College Physics I
PH 202 College Physics II
Total Semester Hours: 59
This major will better prepare pre-professional students for admission to schools of medicine, veterinary medicine, optometry, dentistry, etc. It includes preparation in human anatomy and physiology, calculus, physics and other areas that are difficult to include under the traditional biology major. The impact on other programs should be minimal. None. Courses will be taught with existing faculty and facilities.
